Frequently asked questions about Hypnosis

Can anyone be hypnotised?
Everyone is susceptible to hypnosis to some extent; some more than others. According to research, approximately 10% of the population are considered more susceptible to experience the high degree of changes in sensation and perception with hypnosis. However, roughly 10% are classified as 'low' in which case they may not be responsive to hypnotic suggestion. It is important to remember that no one can be hypnotised against their will.

Is it safe? Will I remember the treatment?
You are able to hear everything that is said and will only take on suggestions which align with your own ethics, values beliefs and identities, as there is a natural protective mechanism at work which protects you as an individual.

With clinical hypnosis, the therapist can make suggestions designed to help you formulate specific internal processes (feelings, memories, images and internal dialog) that will lead to mutually agreed upon outcomes.

Will I be in Control?
Yes, usually only light trances are induced and you will remain aware of what's going on and are in full control at all times.

Is there evidence that hypnotherapy works?
Over the past number of years, hypnotherapy has gained much more media exposure such as newspapers, television and radio programmes. There are also plenty of examples in the scientific literature attesting to the usefulness of clinical hypnosis.

How does it work?
Hypnosis is not mind control or brainwashing. People frequently change their minds and actions throughout their lives as a result of exposure to specific insights, experiences or information presented. Within a pre agreed framework with the patient prior to any treatments, a hypnotherapist uses a method of therapeutic mental suggestion that induces a trance-like state. While you are in a trance-like and receptive state hypnotherapy utilises this beneficial state of hypnosis along with various therapeutic techniques to maximise your potential and facilitate agreed change.

How many sessions are needed?
The number of sessions required depends on the individual client and their particular issue and/or severity. Hypnotherapy tends to show results quickly, normally within two sessions, whereas more complex or deep rooted conditions normally require a few more sessions.
