What
happens next?
A hypnotherapy session is usually carried out one-to-one in a therapeutic
setting. After taking a medical history and discussing how hypnotherapy
may be of use, the patient will be asked to sit in a comfortable
chair or lie on a couch.
A
typical session often starts with a relaxation procedure. During
trance, you are able to move every part of your body and know exactly
where you are the entire time. You can adjust your sitting position,
open your eyes and bring yourself out of trance at any time you
wish to do so. During trance, you can still hear sounds around you.
You can also alert yourself and respond to any situation that needs
your immediate attention should you be required to do so. You remain
orientated as to who and where you are and often you are able to
hold a conversation with the therapist whilst in trance.
It
is important to emphasise that hypnosis cannot cause anyone to do
something against their will or that contradicts their values. Firstly,
a hypnotherapist is ethically required to make only those suggestions
that support agreed-upon outcomes. Secondly, clients are not receptive
to suggestions that go against their morals or values, because receptivity
is one of the ingredients of success in hypnotherapy. Remember,
hypnotherapy cannot solve very problem. With the help of the therapist,
it may still be necessary for you to do some conscientious planning
and active participation in bringing about the type of changes you
want to achieve.
